Digital loyalty card without an app: customer loyalty for cafes

Regulars are the backbone of every local business. A digital loyalty card keeps them coming back without anyone having to download an app from a store. Why it pays off and how an ice cream shop switched from an expensive platform to a lean solution.

Why regulars are so valuable

Acquiring a new customer is considerably more expensive than retaining an existing one. A widely cited range from Harvard Business Review puts it at five to 25 times, depending on the study and industry. And a five percent higher retention rate increases profit by roughly 25 to 95 percent, according to research by Frederick Reichheld (Bain & Company). These are estimated ranges, not fixed constants, but the direction is clear: nurturing existing customers pays off.

A loyalty program without the app store hurdle: the PWA

The biggest obstacle with classic loyalty apps is the download. Hardly anyone installs an app from the store for a coffee. A Progressive Web App (PWA) solves this: it is built with web technologies but feels like a native app. Customers can install it on their home screen straight from the browser, with no app store.

  • A PWA runs from a single codebase on almost any device.
  • As a website it is discoverable via search and can additionally be installed.
  • Technically a web app manifest and delivery over HTTPS are enough; a service worker is added for offline features.

One codebase instead of three apps

Because a PWA does not have to be developed separately for iOS, Android and web, it is usually the more pragmatic route for small retailers. A blanket percentage saving cannot be stated seriously, but the effort for separate native apps disappears.

From practice: 'n Eis zapfen

The ice cream shop 'n Eis zapfen from Frankenberg (now three locations) initially used helloagain, a European loyalty platform. For a small, seasonal business the limits showed quickly: no public prices, an oversized feature set with marketing automation and CRM that an ice cream parlour does not need, and complex onboarding.

With Treuli, my own product, came exactly what was needed: a lean, affordable loyalty program for local businesses. After a purchase customers scan the QR code on the receipt, points are credited automatically with no effort for staff. On top of that come rewards, a welcome and birthday bonus, a refer-a-friend program and an admin dashboard with all the key figures.

What to look for in a loyalty program

  • A low hurdle for customers: no app download, joining with a single scan.
  • Little effort for staff: points should be credited automatically.
  • Fair, transparent costs: seasonal businesses in particular need predictable prices.
  • Only the features you actually use, instead of an overloaded enterprise package.
